Cholestrol and Mech71

"The gist of what I’ve learnt since my heart problem a year ago follows. Hope it is useful.
1. All statins are quite effective in reducing high levels of LDL cholesterol and increasing low levels of HDL cholesterol. The newer varieties, viz., Rosuvastatin and Pitavastatin are particularly so.
2. Unfortunately, all statins produce several adverse side effects, including low energy, muscle damage (including to the heart muscle!), and liver damage. Periodic liver function tests are necessary.
3. I believe we may use them when absolutely necessary, but the dose should be carefully chosen considering one’s weight and tolerance. In my case, for example, I just can’t tolerate even low dosages for more than 2 to 3 days without getting muscle pains.
4. For those who must take statins, it is advisable to consume 100 mg of Ubiquinol (a more powerful and useful form of CoQ10 for those above 45 years of age) once or twice daily with meals to counter the bad effect of statins on the energy mechanism of ALL body cells.
5. Incidentally, cholesterol is not by itself harmful. In fact, it is essential for one’s survival and well-being, and that is why all humans and animals make it. What is more important is to guard ourselves against systemic inflammation and free radicals.
6. Regular moderate physical activity, controlled stress response, relaxation, pranayama (bhastrika, kapalbhati, anulom-vilom - in that order), meditation, nutritious & allergen-free diet including 4-5 servings of fresh fruits and vegetables daily, consuming about 30 gram fibre per day, giving up smoking, maintaining proper blood levels of folate, vitamins B6, B12, C, D3, and minerals like Calcium, Magnesium, Selenium, Chromium, Boron, and Iron will improve overall health and help keep the heart healthy.
7. Finally, consumption of oily-fish/ krill oil (or olive oil, walnuts, and flaxseeds), fresh ginger root or fresh garlic pods daily in very limited quantities is known to be helpful, but those taking prescription ‘blood thinners’ must consult their doctors before trying these out. "
