Vijay Shenai and Ramakrishnan Ramanathan - With GVRS

Image
Vijay Shenai and Ramakrishnan Ramanathan Recently Kop a Mech71er, now a Prof in UK was on a visit to India. This is what Ramu had to say about the visit Kop was in Chennai on his Annual pilgrimage. Like last year we had a get together on 1 Feb'2014 at the IIT Alumni Club close to where GVRS lives. It was an evening of great fun, frolic, food & entertainment and lively discussions on myriad topics. Between the three of us we virtually polished off a large bottle of Johnny Walker Black Label. The club is a swanky place and we had an exclusive "Board Room" all to our ourselves. GVRS being a member here had ensured that we received exclusive privileges and VIP treatment (minus beacon lights of course). Murali who also lives in Chennai was invited but decided to stay away owing to prior commitments. Just goes to show, good friends are forever. GVRS is thrilled to play the host at this Chennai Reunion

A Grand Reception by Ashok Manchanda

Image
Photograph (courtesy Ramu) of a group of Mech71ers at a grand and gracious   wedding reception on the lawns of Vasant Continental, New Delhi on Saturday last week arranged by Ashok Manchanda, IIT classmate from Mechanical 1971 - to celebrate his daughters wedding. He is shown standing second from right in the photo. Quite a few class mates from Mech'71 were in attendance and a group picture is posted here.  This second picture shows more of the mech71ers at the reception, with one present in spirit and not physically. Vinod Marwaha, The Mech71 Star

Image
Vinod Marwaha Of all Mech71 members, one who stands out and shines is Vinod Marwaha. While the participation of many of us has waxed and waned, it has not been so with Vinod. From day one his generous hospitality has been available to all mech71 members who arrive at the central point of Delhi from all corners of the globe from time to time. He is invariably the person everyone contacts first. Not only this, he reminds members of the group when a birthday of a member happens and maintains a directory of members with their addresses and contact numbers that is regularly updated and circulated once a year. One can say without hesitation that the group would not have been what it is without all this. It is hoped that in future any member who visits Delhi shall bring a nice little gift for Vinod or Vinoo as he is called whenever they visit Delhi. In case the gift contains C2H5OH it will be accepted too ( Hope that makes up for one of the members stealing a peg from his wine cabin...

Mech71 Book Lovers

Image
Bittoo and Chander Merani Many Mech71ers are still avid readers of books on all sorts of topics, not just professional books. The attached picture shows two engaged in such an exercise in California, USA. In the words of Bittoo Gill, "Attached is a picture of Chandru (Chander Merani) and Gill in California, enjoying a book written by a famous friend and author. This was followed by a vigorous book discussion over a bottle of Pinot Gris and kababs." The book in their hands is "The Babaji Affair" authored by another mech71er. It is available at an online retailer near you including the Amazon stores in USA, India and elsewhere. The link will be located easily by a google search for anyone interested in acquiring a copy, e.g here: http://www.amazon.com/The-Babaji-Affair-Ashok-Malhotra/dp/149232955X

Cholestrol and Mech71

Image
Digital art entitled red by ashok As mech71ers age they are exchanging information on health issues in their private communications . The beauty of this information is that it combines traditional knowledge with the modern and east with west to present a holistic view. Every once in a while there are pieces that need sharing with the world. Here is one that arrived from H P Mishra one of our dear members this morning: "The gist of what I’ve learnt since my heart problem a year ago follows. Hope it is useful. 1. All statins are quite effective in reducing high levels of LDL cholesterol and increasing low levels of HDL cholesterol. The newer varieties, viz., Rosuvastatin and Pitavastatin are particularly so. 2. Unfortunately, all statins produce several adverse side effects, including low energy, muscle damage (including to the heart muscle!), and liver damage. Periodic liver function tests are necessary. 3. I believe we may use them when absolutely necessary...
