Mech71

Some of the Mech71members from Delhi, Kuwait and Australia gathered in Delhi this cold December of 2011 for merry making. A copy of the group is shown in the photo: (Assembly: Host NK, Manchi, GR Vij, Purang, Pujari, Shorty, Bhav Dutt, VK Gupta and Garbar Gulati) Bhav Datt from the Axxx of the world down under is towering over the rest in the photo. He also shines the brightest as apparent in the detailed photos on the link provided in this post. Perhaps the reason for that is, he does not have to face the pollution and hustle-bustle of Delhi like the others, in the more pristine environmet of Sydney. As the 1971 graduates of the Indian Institute of Technology, Delhi age and shed off some of their professional responsibilities they have taken to novel pursuits to fill the gap. One of them is writing novels. This task is not beyond the diverse talents of IIT graduates. Chetan Bhagat is proof of that. A leading Mech71er – Anand Julka also known as Bill Julka has finished writing his first novel. It is awaiting finishing touches before publication. Another Mech71er – Ashok Malhotra – who had authored a Novella earlier (Mystic and the Blossoms) released his new novel – Nude besides the lake earlier this year. JULY 2011 This chronicle begins on Saturday afternoon when I drove from Columbus to 13 Glen Eagle Ct under sunny skies and among light traffic. A mere 4.5 h compared to 7.5 for Ravi/Sonu/Nirmal and 10.0 for Gang (nothing for a guy who laugh at moguls. When I asked about the scheduled Bazooka's outing the previous light (which I was loathe to miss but could not manage), I got averted eyes and mumbles - deciphered to mean that the event did not happen because of people being (mumble) late, and (mumble) tired. Not sure whether the debauchery was so great that it could not be uttered in the light of day, or whether (I doubt it) - it was really cancelled. So, Gill met me at the door with Merani and handshaking and shoulder patting and hugs followed. While most Mech71ers are still busy with things of this life, at least one Mech71er has turned his attention to the Spiritual side. Anup Gulati, known affectionately as Gulla to his college friends made the difficult trek across the snowy Himalayas to Mount Kailash - the abode of Shiva - and the Mansarovar lake. He has just returned, frozen from a dip in the lake, spiritual blessings and photos from the roof of the world. The photo here shows him standing at the foot of the mountain.

Inspite of the fact that there have been few new posts in this blog in recent years, Mech71 as a group is still active. The latest US group reunion organised by H S Gill was held earlier this month in New York. Just today a lost member of the group Anirudh Kathavate was found due to the search by another active member of the Group Nirmal Singh. While Julka, Johri, Nirmal, Gill and others are keeping the club alive in the US. Marwaha, Gulla and Manchanda keep the activities going on Indian soil. After being chosen to lead the Brahmins of the consulting world, Rajat , a 1971 Mechanical Graduate of IIT Delhi and a prominent Mech71 member, repeated the feat and was re-elected as McKinsey's managing director in 1997 and again in 2000. With him at the helm, McKinsey grew at a scorching pace. By 2002, he had expanded McKinsey's network to 84 global locations from 58, increased number of consulting staff to 7,700 from 2,900, and lifted revenues to $3.4 billion from $1.2 billion in 1993. During this time, the company entered emerging markets like China and India. Entry into other Asian countries too has been credited to him. Since stepping down as managing director, Gupta, while continuing work with McKinsey as a senior partner, has increased his involvement with India significantly.
